Ellen DeGeneres: new TV show not another 'lesbian comedy'

ELLEN DeGeneres is to make a new comedy series featuring a lesbian woman and a straight man who decide to have a baby together.

But the chat show host has stressed that the new television series One Big Happy will not be another "lesbian comedy".

Starring Elisha Cuthbert, Nick Zano and Kelly Brook, the series will follow the fate of a lesbian woman (Cuthbert) and her straight male best friend (Zano) as they decide to have a baby together. DeGeneres will produce the series.

The comedienne, whose character famously came out in 1997 in the TV show Ellen, told journalists last week that she did not want the series to be typecast as a "lesbian comedy".

"It just happens to be a very funny show. It happens to have a lesbian character in it", she said.

"It's not like I formed a production company and said, 'Bring me all your lesbian scripts.' I'm not just going to be a lesbian machine that just turns out stuff."

The sitcom will be written by Ellen screenwriter Liz Feldman, who claims the show is inspired by "real" events and does not come "from any sort of agenda".

DeGeneres, 56, starting performing stand-up in the Eighties, she then moved into film as an actress in the Nineties, also appearing in two successful sitcoms Ellen and The Ellen Show.

She had since become best known for being a TV personality on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

In the course of her career she has won 13 Emmys and 14 Peoples' Choice awards.
