THE Central Highlands Regional Council has welcomed some valuable and long-awaited assets this month.
Five new generators have been installed across the region to assist in the running of disaster control and evacuation centres.
Council applied for funding for the generators through the Federal Government’s Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements which was approved in mid-2010, and installation was supposed to occur in January, 2011, a plan that was postponed due to the most recent flooding event.
This provided a timely reminder of the importance of the generators, according to CHRC Mayor Peter Maguire.
“It can be a long time between events like the one that we just experienced but we need to keep planning and keeping our region up-to-date and prepared for whatever comes our way,” he said.
The installation of the generators at venues in Springsure, Capella, Blackwater and Emerald, meant that every community would have power supplies to evacuation centres and disaster co-ordination centre.
CHRC manager of Corporate Governance Bill Wilkinson said the generators would enhance responses to disasters.
“In the event of a storm or disaster in any of these areas that affects power supply, people will be able to be evacuated and a co-ordination centre set up to maintain contact with local, state and national agencies to ensure a timely and well executed response,” he said.
