EMERALD’S John Gay Bridge was closed on Wednesday afternoon with water over the road.

“This closure will probably be for a week to 10 days, depending on no more rain and how the bridge and road-base dries out,” Mayor Peter Maguire said.

The water was about 500mm over the bridge, and the council will use the opportunity to undertake repairs to the failed sections on both approaches to bridge.

“The maintenance crew has made a start on the work,” Cr Maguire said.

“There will also be work occurring at the intersection of Opal and Roberts Sts. While this is happening we will close Riverview St and Roberts St and detour traffic through New St.

“Council staff have agreed to work on their rostered days off to minimise the disruption to residents, and we certainly appreciate that commitment. All of this work should be completed by early next week.”

Council will have traffic controllers in place near the Caltex intersection in line with the beginning and end of school days during the bridge closure.
