Meninga touches down in Emerald

“IT’S always smooth coming into Emerald.”

Those were Mal Meninga’s first words when the Central Queensland News caught up with the NRL legend, fresh from his flight into town yesterday afternoon.

Even the hour-delayed flight from Brisbane didn’t dim his optimism for the fundraising events he and AFL great Sam Kekovich will front to entertain Blackwater and Tieri locals this weekend.

“We’re here for a whirlwind two days before heading back to Brisbane,” Mal said.

“I’ve been to Emerald a couple of times, and have family in Barcaldine, but it’s always good to come back for a visit.”

And what about this year’s State of Origin battle? Will the mighty Maroons stretch their winning streak?

“We’re planning to be successful,” Mal said.

“That’s our plan.”
