"Emergency situation" shuts down Brisbane streets

POLICE cordoned off a Brisbane block from 11.30am, declaring an "emergency situation".

Emergency services were reacting to a gas leak in South Brisbane, causing the shut down of Peel St westbound between Grey St and Merivale St, near Brisbane's Southbank parklands.

Hope St and Fleet Ln were also blocked off.

The emergency situation was cancelled at 12.05pm but parts of Peel St remained off limits.
