Employers go to school on 3Rs

RECRUITMENT, retention and remuneration. These three R's, along with a strategic plan is the key to success for businesses in the mining and resources industry.

These were some of the strategies that Hays resources and mining senior business manager Gareth Broadrick discussed with Mackay Area Industry Network's members during a breakfast at the Ocean International yesterday.

"It's two-fold. There's attracted talent; lifestyle rosters, a lot of people want more of a work-life balance but we've also got to retain the people we've already got," Mr Broadrick said.

"One of the areas we spoke about was temporary employment and people working on a contract basis. There's a huge pool of potential talent that we want contact with but at the moment there's a perception that we want permanent employees."

Targeting mature age and retirees who want to work on a short-term contract basis for short projects was a strategy he urged employees to consider.

While different strategies worked to target potential employees, some employers' strategies focused on experience.

"What our clients want, and clients of the people at the (sites) want, is people who have experience," he said.

"There are a lot of people who want work, they just need to be given the opportunity."
