Numbers continue to grow for triathlon club on the up
TRIATHLON and duathlon participant numbers have consistently increased over the past year as the Central Highlands Triathlon Club held its largest race in Emerald to mark its last event for 2012.
Club president Scott Chapman said the Corporate Bodies International Emerald Triathlon and Duathlon, which saw about 70 participate, went really well as more people signed up to become members.
"It was our biggest race we've had so far this year," he said.
"It was postponed from a couple of weeks ago.
"People from as far as Yeppoon and people from all around the Highlands came… and a lot of first-time people come out which was good."
Chapman said the 5km walk, designed for those who aren't up to cycling and swimming stages yet, was really well taken up with about 15-20 competing.
Among the other highlights was the junior race that welcomed 15 participants which Chapman said was pleasing to see.
The race concludes the club's calendar for the year which starts up again in 2013 on January 26 in Middlemount.
Over the past year, participants have raced in Clermont, Capella, Blackwater, Springsure and Emerald and Chapman said there were quite a few races scheduled in the new year.
"We've had an increase over the whole year," he said.
"Following up on last year, we had about 150 signed up. This year we had 200 signed up so we are seeing an increase."
