Ex-bikie club given a ‘woman’s touch’
TWO Sunshine Coast businesswomen have had a rare glimpse into the life of a bikie.
Dale James and Faye Robbins took over the old Bandidos Motorcycle Club clubhouse recently after it was vacated a few months ago.
Now the former bikie hangout is home to their art business, Mosaic Art Studio.
Just after moving in the artists got the shock of their lives when the Federal Police turned up on their doorstep at the Caloundra Rd clubhouse, which was still listed as having affiliations with bikies.
"We got it all cleared up," Mrs James laughed.
The Shelly Beach resident said when they first moved to the premises they were "fearful" of a bikie attack but now felt safe.
"Every time we heard a motorbike drive past we were on edge," she said.
"It is quite exciting though - years ago they (police) found guns at the clubhouse, but we feel quite protected now.
"We haven't had any problems."
Mrs Robbins admitted it was "a bit strange" at the start.
"I am not scared now; I haven't done anything to them (the Bandidos)."
Mrs James said the clubhouse needed a makeover as it was covered in the Bandidos colours from top to bottom, with the roof and floor painted red and the walls gold.
She said the windows and doors were covered in steel, there were security cameras, an intercom and a stage in the nightclub set-up.
Mrs James and her business partner have put in a lot of work to get the space up to scratch and make it "pretty" and "girly".
And their "woman's touch" on the former bikie digs also included creating a mosaic design on the two swords welded to the front gates of the property.
"We have curtains up now in the old club house, but we have kept a hold of the clubhouse sign," Mrs James said.
The ladies opted to lease the ex-bikie clubhouse as they were looking for a big space to house their art studio and gallery.
"We offer shell art and mosaic classes," Mrs James said.
"We have kids' classes as well as evening classes, and also sell take-home kits.
"Our clientele ranges from young to elderly.
"We teach about how to use the tools, how to grout, mixing colours and help guide you along the way."
Mosaic Art Studio is located at 3/37 Caloundra Rd, Caloundra West.
