Excitement for first day of Prep

ARMED with her new lunchbox in her hands and braids in her hair, Hannah O'Donnell is ready to face all that Prep has to offer.

The five-year-old begins her formal schooling today, joining her older brothers Joshua and Mitchell at Emerald Christian College for the first day of the 2016 school year.

The big step is marked by a change in uniform, which Hannah proudly showed off.

"My new uniform is different, it used to be little and it said Gems, this says College," she says, pointing to the emblem.

She also has a brand new lunchbox which she hopes includes her favourite snacks - a banana and a ham and cheese sandwich.

She said "Joshie" chose it and she bought the pink one because there was no purple.

The Prep student said she was excited to do painting as well as learning how to read with her favourite book, the "Mummy and Daddy book".

"I can read it all by myself," she said proudly.

Mum Kim O'Donnell said the day was special as Hannah was the last of her three children to start school.

"How am I feeling?" she said.

"Emotional. I miss all the children when they are at school.

"It's a long day without them and this year I'm not taking anyone home again after drop-off."

Kim said the excitement had been building in the O'Donnell household in the lead up to school with Hannah very keen to start wearing her new Prep shoes.

"Hannah is very much looking forward to Prep and yes she has been counting down the days this week," Kim said.

"She got new pencils, pencil case, books and special name tags that she was super excited to put on all her things."
