Delicate clean-up operation under way after truck rollover

UPDATE 6.30PM: Emergency crews will work into the night on a delicate clean-up operation after a truck rollover at Valkyrie on Wednesday morning.

Police have set up a 3km exclusion zone at the Fitzroy Development Rd scene as the truck was carrying ammonium nitrate, a highly explosive material.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman said SES, Queensland Police Service, and Queensland Ambulance Service were also on scene as the recovery phase began - more than 12 hours after the 5.20am crash.

The spokeswoman said a crane was being used to stabilise the truck and its two trailers while a crew began to empty, or decant, the contents of the front trailer.

She said crews would then restabilise the scene including by applying more sand to the ground before moving onto the second trailer.

A QFES Scientific Officer remained on standby.

Queensland Trucking Association Gary Mahon said the public should not be concerned about the "extraordinarily rare" incident.

"Any incident is more than we want," Mr Mahon said.

"But the standards and the requirements around carriage of these sorts of goods are quite expansive.

"The people generally involved in these sorts of freight are specialists … and have to demonstrate significant compliance practices.

"I think it's one of those things - for commerce to work and for mines to operate … they do need this sort of freight carried to various locations."

UPDATE 10.30AM: An exclusion zone around Valkyrie is expected to remain in place all day after a truck rollover Wednesday morning.

Police established the restricted area under the Public Safety Preservation Act because of fears of an explosion risk.

The exclusion zone encompasses 3km around the crash site, including the airspace above, a Queensland Police spokesman said.

"Traffic is being diverted around the exclusion zone from Peak Downs Highway and Golden Mile Road," he said.

"This incident is likely to last all day.

"Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and urged to follow the advice of emergency services on the ground."

UPDATE 8.45AM: An exclusion zone has been extended from 1km to 3km in Valkyrie after a truck rollover sparked fears of an explosion risk.

A nearby school, which is outside the exclusion zone, has also been told to prepare to evacuate if needed, Queensland Ambulance senior operations supervisor Dean Hay said.

Emergency services were called to the incident at Valkyrie about 5.20am Wednesday.

No major injuries were reported and one man in a stable condition was being assessed for shoulder injuries.

"The situation is being dealt with quite seriously due to the substances being carried on board," Mr Hay said.

"Queensland fire (crews) have done an assessment on the vehicle and have removed a battery to remove any ignition sources that could potentially set off any fires to bushland."

All previous road closures and warnings remain in place.

INITIAL 6.40AM: An exclusion zone has been set up in a one kilometre radius of a truck rollover near Moranbah over fears of an explosion risk.

Emergency services were called to the incident at Valkyrie about 5.20am Wednesday.

No major injuries were reported.

A Public Safety Preservation Act has been set up in the area because of what the truck was hauling, which has created an explosion risk.

Queensland Police have advised Fitzroy Development Road, Valkyrie, is closed between Golf Mine Rd and Moranbah Rd with an exclusion zone one kilometre each side of Fitzroy Development Rd.
