'Experimenting sexually': Teens desperately need saving

PROMPTED by a recent spate of antisocial behaviour, a community focus group has come up with a plan to tame teenagers getting up to no good in Lions Park, in Gladstone.

Starting Thursday night Pastor James Hewitt will don his hi-vis chaplain's vest and start foot patrols between at the park to bridge the gap with potentially troubled youth.

Pastor Hewitt said the focus group found teenagers gathered in the park were vandalising property, fighting and engaging in antisocial behaviour in the area.

"The issue is they're loitering in the park," he said.

"But there has been some incidences of property damage, smoking...and they're experimenting with each other sexually.

"So we're going to make ourselves known and try to make contact and build relationships with these kids."

Kin Kora McDonald's owner Tony Ward said the antisocial behaviour in Lions Park was only a recent occurrence.

But he said it was only a small number of teenagers who were causing "a few problems in town".

"Any kind of antisocial behaviour isn't good for other users of the park and shops and businesses.

"I think having the chaplains talk to the kids and engage with the kids is an excellent road to take."

The latest Queensland Police statistics reveal between October 1 and December 5 there were 56 incidents of property damage in Gladstone.
