MEMBER for Burnett Stephen Bennett has welcomed news mining company Earth Commodities has exported its first load of silica sand from the Bundaberg Port.

Mr Bennett, who has been vocal about the expansion of the port for a number of years, said it was a huge win for the region.

"This will, with the right management, pave the way for the expansion of export related activities across the Wide Bay Burnett," he said.

"It has expanded the potential to open the door to more development, long-term export opportunities and the creation of much-needed jobs. "It would be a welcome commercial addition to our region."

Mr Bennett said the LNP, when in government, actively sought to unlock Bundaberg Port's potential.

"The Port of Bundaberg is an important component of the state's port network, but it was underutilised for too long," he said.

"We understood that and we worked hard to create these opportunities.

"The then LNP government took action to address this and undertook a freight demand study to commercially advance the Port of Bundaberg."
