Is the family holiday dead?
LONGER hours at the office and busy family lives are being blamed for almost 20% of Queenslanders taking only one holiday per year and for less than one week, but could this actually be good news for domestic tourism?
Tourism Research Australia reports the number of Australians taking more day and overnight trips is on the increase, showing a new trend of travellers looking for closer holiday destinations that will allow them to experience their ultimate holiday in a shorter amount of time.
Moreton Island Adventures CEO, Roz Shaw said they have seen a big increase in time-poor Queenslanders coming for quick weekend getaways over the last few years.
"We understand that it is becoming harder for people to take time out of their busy schedule for extended family holidays and indeed with the GFC domestic travel has been more affordable and desirable for many families," she said.
"There is no doubt that the traditional family holiday is changing shape, but what still remains is that 91% of people recently surveyed still prefer the beach holiday whether it be for an overnighter, a long weekend, or if they are lucky the week.
"We have some of the world's very best beaches at our door step and with this increase in weekend visitations, Moreton Island is certainly experiencing the positive effects of the short term holiday market.
Tourism Australia are also supporting the local tourism push with their new campaign - There's nothing like Australia - with managing director Andrew McEvoy saying that "with this promotion we want people to encourage other Australians to take a fresh look at the best local holiday experiences."
Only a 75 minute ferry ride from Brisbane's CBD, Moreton Island has something for everyone, especially those who like to plan their holidays on the go, rather than booking in advance.
