A DRIVER who accidentally hit a young girl when she ran out in front of his car was then bashed by the girl's family at Westridge Shopping Centre.

The five-year-old girl ran out from the footpath and into the path of the car at the West St shopping centre at 7.30pm on Tuesday.

The child's angry family members attacked the 41-year-old driver, jumping in through his car windows to bash him around the head.

The injured driver escaped the family members, who then started fighting each other.

Multiple police crews, detectives, paramedics and firefighters went to the crash-turned-brawl.

Police said the girl was upset, but sustained no visible injuries.

Paramedics took her to the Toowoomba Hospital where she was kept in overnight for observation.

The driver sustained facial injuries and has made a formal complaint of assault.

Police sent the driver home and remained at the scene to keep the peace until 8.46pm.

No charges have been laid at this stage.
