Famous fighters dumped in hole

THE SIGHT of F-111s being "unceremoniously dumped in a rubbish tip" has outraged Ipswich councillor Paul Tully.

Cr Tully, also a keen historian, was unimpressed to discover that the Defence Materiel Organisation (DMO) had arranged for 23 of the decommissioned iconic Ipswich aircraft to be buried at Swanbank Industrial Park.

"I am disappointed that there was no community consultation. The fact of the matter is that there is nearly 50 years of Australian history literally gone down a disused Ipswich coal mine," he said.

Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann, confirmed yesterday that seven of the decommissioned F-111s would be loaned to museums and other historical organisations across Australia.

But Cr Tully said more of the F-111s could have been found homes. "So many of those could have gone to community groups, towns, historical organisations and museums around Australia," he said.

"If there had been some serious community consultation then I think more communities would have put their hands up for them. To be unceremoniously dumped in a rubbish tip is not a fitting end for something that has served Australia from the 1960s on. The F-111 was known to generations."

Cr Tully pointed out that the Amberley Airforce Base was "the home base of the F-111." He confirmed he was given no notification of the dumping action.

"It was like a military exercise to get them from Amberley to Swanbank as quickly as possible and dump them in the bottom of the pit."

The DMO was unavailable for comment last night.
