Father’s inspiring 20kg weight drop in just eight weeks
JUST two months ago, Carl Voller was a different man.
Not only was he 20 kilos heavier, but the 61-year-old didn't believe he could make a change in his life.
That was until he took his first step into Maroochydore's World Gym.
"I was pretty fat at the time so I thought I'd do my best and give exercising a real shot," he said.
Agreeing to participate in an eight-week challenge with his daughter Sarah, Carl embarked on his own health and fitness journey many of us know all too well.
Yet not all of us can say it was a huge success. Carl can.
"I ended up losing 23.2 kilos," he said.
"One of my older daughters is a dietitian and she told me it was pretty unheard to lose that amount of weight in that short amount of time."
The challenge was not without difficulty for Carl, who said it truly pushed his limits at times.
"That eight weeks … sure it's physically tough and you have to restrict your eating, but it's also mentally very tough," he said.
"I found it a real mental challenge and sometimes I was in some dark places because I was really tired, run down, and hungry."
Although Carl now feels "fantastic" from his physical transformation, perhaps what's most inspiring is the change of his mindset.
"It was life changing for me, joining this gym," he said.
"This is my second life.
"I live by the mantra now that you can do anything. I believe in myself and I believe I can do anything."
On a career level, the father of 12 has now begun building on his new outlook.
"I want to encourage and inspire young people because I'm a pre-service teacher and I'm studying at uni to become a secondary school teacher," he said.
"I want to encourage my future students to have goals and believe in themselves as I do now in myself.
"I want to live a long life so I can continue teaching and also stick around for my children. I want to see my grandchildren, four at this stage, grow up."
With the intention of continuing his training, Carl has a few more goals he hasn't quite reached yet.
"It's my goal to compete in a body building competition and I want to compete against younger guys and beat them," he said.
"And I will."
Maroochydore's World Gym will announce the winners of the eight week challenge next week.
Regardless of the outcome, personal trainer Frank Huskisson said he was inspired by Carl's tenacity.
"It was amazing to see how hard he pushed," he said.
"He probably pushed a little too hard at times.
"But I'm super proud of him, and looking forward to building on what's next."
