Final Fairfax vote still two weeks away

ONLY six of 89,173 ballots cast in Fairfax remain to be checked but a result in Australia's only undecided federal electorate could still be two weeks away.

And it appears increasingly likely the outcome may be ultimately decided in the Court of Disputed Returns.

Section 283 of the Electoral Act allows the court to only consider ballot papers that have been reserved for the decision of the Australian Electoral Officer.

There were 47,135 of those, mostly challenged by scrutineers for Clive Palmer.

Mr Palmer led the LNP's Ted O'Brien by just seven votes after the full distribution of preferences concluded a fortnight ago.

Of the 47,135 ballots referred to divisional returning officer David McKenzie, 32,744 have then been sent to Ann Bright, the electoral officer for Queensland. Of these, fewer than 11,000 ballots have yet to be determined.

A spokeswoman said Australian Electoral Commission officers worked through the weekend in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast and continued their work yesterday.

"It will probably be another two weeks,'' the AEC spokeswoman said. "There is no real parallel for this."
