Finch in demand at Indian Premier League player auction

A CENTURY against England in Australia's opening World Cup game certainly proved to be good timing for Aaron Finch, with the opener being snapped up by the Mumbai Indians for $662,000 in the Indian Premier League auction.

While Finch was in demand, the same could not be said for Matthew Wade, Cameron White, Ben Hilfenhaus and Brad Hodge, who were all overlooked.

Emerging New South Wales all-rounder Sean Abbott went to Royal Challengers Bangalore for $207,000 and veteran batsman Mike Hussey is headed back to the Chennai Super Kings for $310,000.

The Delhi Daredevils were the big spenders, splashing out $1.55 million for Sri Lanka's World Cup captain Angelo Matthews and a staggering $3.31 million for India's Yuvraj Singh, no doubt helping ease the pain of missing out on the World Cup.

Meanwhile Aussie all-rounder James Faulkner has ruled himself out of Saturday's World Cup clash with Bangladesh at the Gabba.

The Tasmanian, who picked up a side strain while bowling in the final of the one-day series against England, said he was uncertain whether he would be available for Australia's third game against New Zealand in Auckland on February 28.

"That's the question I'm asking as well," he told reporters in Brisbane.

Faulkner is regarded as a certainty to come into the starting XI once he regains full fitness, meaning either Mitch Marsh or Shane Watson would miss out.

Marsh certainly did his cause no harm against England, making 23 runs and taking 5-33, while Watson was out for a first-ball duck and went wicketless from three overs.
