AN Aaron Finch century and five wickets from Mitchell Marsh helped Australia to victory in the World Cup opener at the MCG last night.
Finch's classy 135 runs off 128 balls helped the Australians set a total of 342 despite shaky results from the top order.
Opener Dave Warner was bowled for 22, Shane Watson went for a duck and Steve Smith added just five to the total.
George Bailey's 55 off 69 balls helped steady the ship before Glenn Maxwell added 66 in 60 balls to put Australia in a good position.
Steven Finn was the most dangerous Englishman with the ball, taking 5-71.
The visitors struggled with the bat, falling into a hole early.
Opener Moeen Ali and No.3 Gary Ballance scored just 10 runs apiece, and England's other opener, Ian Bell, mustered 36.
Only James Taylor's 98 not out saved the visitors from total embarrassment.
Australia won by 111 runs. Earlier in the day New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by 98 runs.
