POLICE have declared a crime scene and revised an exclusion zone on Brisbane's northside, following a huge fire at a local business.

Businesses were earlier evacuated and residents urged to stay indoors amid fears of toxic smoke billowing from the massive factory fire off Sandgate Rd, at Virginia. The fire has since been brought under control.

An exclusion zone bordering Pritchard Rd, Shannon Place and Sandgate Rd remains but police say the thick black smoke, which earlier blanketed the wider area, has now been "largely reduced" and that "residents are now advised that can go about their normal business."

At least 10 fire trucks attended the scene as well as two aerial crews.

Emergency services were called to the blaze about 3.35pm.

Footage of the fire showed black smoke billowing from the building, believed to be a plastics factory.

Paramedics were also called to the scene, and it is understood three fire fighters were treated for heat exhaustion.

Nearby businesses, including a pet store, an Officer Works and petrol station were evacuated and some buildings sustained minor damage due to the heat of the fire.

In accordance with standard procedures, police will treat the fire as suspicious until investigators are able to determine the cause of the blaze.
