First time Father's Day
EXACTLY a week after the birth of his daughter, Scott Mclennan and wife Violeta will celebrate their first Father's Day this Sunday.
Their daughter Martina Grace was born at Emerald Hospital weighing a healthy 3.6kg.
"I'm over the moon. It's the best feeling in the world,” Scott says of becoming a first time father.
"She's perfect and healthy - everything is great.”
Squeamish at the sight of medical scenes on movies, both Violeta and Scott joked about how the New Zealand-born miner would cope during the birth. But they need not have worried.
Scott was fantastic, Violeta said.
"The midwives even offered him a job afterwards,” she said.
Violeta was born in Germany and the pair met while they were both in London in 2008.
With family scattered across Europe, Australia and New Zealand, the couple has never let distance get in the way of special moments. Earlier this year they organised a surprise wedding and pregnancy announcement. Family members who were able, gathered and those who could not joined them via Skype.
Martina Grace, who was named after Violeta's late father, Martin, carries two of the families traits.
"She has my ears,” Scott said.
"Everyone in my family has them and Martina didn't escape tradition.”
Another important trait Martina didn't escape was the family's love of rugby. Scott, a devoted All Blacks fan, was impressed that Martina knew not to arrive until just after the end of the Bledisloe Cup.
"There's a lot of changing nappies ahead but I'm so excited about watching her grow up,” he said.
