Flash flooding predicted for CQ with 200mm expected

FLASH flooding is predicted for parts of Central Queensland over the next few days with rainfall in excess of 200mm expected to saturate river systems across the region.

Rockhampton Bureau of Meteorology technical officer Brendan Bradford said minor to moderate flooding was expected in the Fitzroy River catchment by the weekend.

Mr Bradford said rainfall in excess of 200mm in CQ could lead to minor-to-moderate flooding in the upper reaches of the Fitzroy River catchment such as the Dawson River and minor flash flooding in the lower reaches such as the Fitzroy River at Rockhampton.

"Showers and storms are forecast for the rest of today before we get some very heavy rainfall from tomorrow through to Saturday morning," Mr Bradford said.

"This is one of the rainfall events this year in which we could see some flooding in the Fitzroy system.

"There is already a bit of flow in the upper reaches of the Fitzroy.

"At 9am yesterday morning we recorded a height of 3.81m at Riverslea with the water already going over the bridge at Riverslea (41cm over)."

"We could see further rises at Riverslea and The Gap but it might take a few days to travel down to Rockhampton."

After a violent storm cell ripped through North Rockhampton on Monday afternoon causing damage to schools and homes, Mr Bradford warned further storms this week could again bring damaging winds.
