Flights thrown into disarray by Cyclone Marcia

AIRLINES and airports have cancelled services and closed the doors ahead of Tropical Cyclone Marcia's arrival this morning.

Given its place in the path of the now-Category Five system Rockhampton airport will be shut until Friday afternoon.

ROLLING COVERAGE: Tropical Cyclone Marcia tipped to cross coastline at 10am

Chair of Rockhampton's Local Disaster Management Group Councillor Tony Williams said that this closure was due to the extreme weather that has been predicted.

"We are in for very strong winds over the next 24 hours, and this has an impact on the safety of aircraft flying into the Region," said Cr Williams.

"For residents who are booked on passenger flights tomorrow, it is important to contact your airline carrier and discuss options"

"Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service is relocating tonight temporarily to Mackay to ensure that they are still able to offer assistance to the Region if required."

Mackay Airport is also closed.

Most flights to and from Gladstone and Hervey Bay have been cancelled until at least noon on Friday.

Sunshine Coast Airport, meanwhile, is operating as usual for now.

Virgin Australia has downed all flights to and from Bundaberg, Gladstone, Hervey Bay, Mackay and Rockhampton until at least 9am on Friday, although this will likely be extended given Marcia is expected to make landfall at 10am.

Qantas has warned travellers to check their flight status directly, with Marcia likely to affect flights to and from: Brisbane, Hamilton Island, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Hervey Bay, Bundaberg, Coolangatta, Biloela, Blackall, Barcaldine and Longreach.

All of this information is likely to change as Cyclone Marcia hits Queensland's coastline today.

Check your own flight directly with your airline, your airport or your travel agent.
