Councils call for Roads to Recovery to be doubled

LOCAL councils have called on politicians to double the national Roads to Recovery fund to $700 million a year and put $200 million into a new freight strategy.

Based on modelling by the National Institute of Economic and Industry Research, the Australian Local Government Association's election wish list is centred on investments councils believe can lift GDP by $7 billion and create 19,000 jobs.

ALGA president Troy Pickard said the plan called for the restoration of increases to councils' key grants - from $2.3 billion to $3.8 billion.
