Four clubs to take on best

SWIMMING: Gladstone's four swimming clubs will have a strong representation in Brisbane today and tomorrow.

Athletes from Western Waves Swimming and Triathlon Club, Gladstone Gladiators, Boyne-Tannum Bullets and Gladstone South will compete in the Ronald McDonald House Charities Queensland Sprint Championships.

Souths' president Ryan Chinner said coach Adam Eiseman had Caleb and Jacob O'Mealley (14-year boy's), Monica Tumbers (13-year girl's), Jesse Hayden, Wade Harris and Kai Chinner well-prepared for the 50-metre sprint championships.

"Caleb will be in the 13-years and also in a couple of the Opens where he will swim in freestyle and backstroke," Chinner said.

"Jesse, Wade and Kai will be in the 11-year boy's and they are all great mates as well."

Waves will feature six swimmers; Clara Furness, Georgia Staines, Tom Staines, Felix Sykes, Charlotte Spearing and Richard Furness.

Club president Alex Staines said it would be coach Ryan McLoughlin's first championships.

It will be Georgia's fifth trip while Tom will compete for the fourth time and Charlotte will make her debut.

Richard Furness, 52, will compete in the freestyle and backstroke in the Chandler pool. He swam there as a child for the Chandler club and is in training for the Queensland Masters in Rockhampton in March.

Bullets will have a contingent of 11 athletes who will swim in 28 individual events across both days.

Grace Bosci will tackle three disciplines in the Open Women (backstroke and freestyle) as well as in the 15-year girl's butterfly.

Eight swimmers will don the Gladiator colours in Brisbane - Paris Richardson, Emma Hunter, Federica Tiboni, Joel Rickard, Cyrena Dixon, Kane Martin, Amelia Williams and Shianne Plunkett.

"The Queensland Sprint Championships is a good starting platform to state level swimming for all swimmers," Gladiators' coach Tom Fronek said.
