Four best mates killed in horror crash

A community is grieving after a fourth teen has died in hospital overnight following a horror car crash in Queensland.

The crash on Saturday has killed a group of teen boys, described as best mates, who had spent the Friday night together before the accident that would take their lives.

Tom Breen, a 19-year-old from Burdekin, passed away overnight in Townsville hospital, unable to recover from his injuries. His best friends Braydan Carter-Mathews, 18, Ryan Beckman, 19, and Shawn Woods, 18 were also killed in the accident on Saturday.

While the teens had spent the previous night out together, it's not known what they were doing in the Tully area.

Crash investigators think their car, which was discovered in a riverbed having come off the road about 1pm on Saturday, may have crashed many hours before it was discovered.

The boys were found about 1pm, about 30 kms west of Tully, in the Cassowary Coast Region in Queensland.

The car may have been in the river for up to 12 hours by the time it was discovered, according to Sergeant Scott Ezard of Cairns Forensic Crash Unit.

A fisherman noticed their car, a Holden Astra, which had come off the road, flipped and was semi submerged in the Tully River.

Three of the teens, Braydan Carter-Mathews, 19, a Cairns resident from the Burdekin, and Ryan Beckman, 19, and Shawn Woods, 18 were pronounced dead at the scene.

Tom Breen succumbed to his injuries last night, four days after the crash.

The boys’ vehicle was discovered by a fisherman semi-submerged in a riverbed near Tully.

The indescribable tragedy has shaken the Burdekin community, who are rallying their support around the grieving families and friends.

A Gofundme page to support the family of Braydan has reached over $11,000 in two days.

As Tom passed, a friend posted a moving tribute to the teen on social media, calling him "absolutely remarkable", according to the Townsville Bulletin.

"Tom you weren't like anyone else, you were unique and it was utterly beautiful, your way with words, your humour, your smile is just unforgettable," his friend wrote.

"I will miss our late night chats, I'll miss you trying to bring my spirits up as I tried with yours, I will miss speaking absolute trash with you about the most random things, I'll miss your company as I used to love when you and Francis came to visit, I'll miss smiling back at you.

‘Best mates’: The indescribable tragedy has rocked the local community.

"I'll always be thankful for knowing you, god or a higher power someone/something made you absolutely remarkable and phenomenal or maybe it was just you. I've never met a soul so kind and genuine as yours Tom, you always put others first even when you weren't feeling so strong.

"We will all miss such a gorgeous soul taken so so soon, I really really wish I got to speak to you and give you one last cuddle and I know everyone does so so much too. you will live on in each and every one of us.

"I love you so much and so does EVERYONE! You touched so many lives and I'll forever be thankful for being your friend, this isn't the end. I'll see you again one day beautiful boy."
