Motorists fill up as prices drop to lowest in a decade

TIMES could be the best in a decade for camping trips, if you own a four-wheel drive like James Brewster.

Because with an Isuzu Dmax truck that burns through a 72L tank in 540km, the current rock bottom fuel prices have made road trips much more affordable to the Mackay resident.

"I'm more inclined to go camping when it's cheaper," Mr Brewster said.

"Last time I went down to Lotus Creek at Sarina, but I only went about four or five times last year.

"An Isuzu DMax uses a lot of gas. It's definitely something you need to think about."

Before he heads off, Mr Brewster said he'll scout out the local service station for the best deals and has found the Shakespeare St BP managed by Mandeep Singh to offer some of the best deals.

Yesterday, his diesel was 107.9c/L and unleaded 91 was 106.9c/L.

"The last few months, it's been the lowest in 10 years," Mr Singh said.

"I think it will stay below 110.0c/L for the next two months.

"I used to work in Sydney and the price would change very quickly there. But in Mackay I never see the price change quickly."

Mr Singh believed as his service station was not on the highway, low prices didn't significantly change customer numbers.

"I offered it for 99.9c/L and sold an extra 2000L of fuel a couple of days ago," he said.

"But in the end I lose money."

He said customer numbers were actually higher back in 2014, when the price of petrol was about $159.0c/L.

"I think it was just because more people were here because of the mining boom," Mr Singh said.

"Now what people spend just depends on their pocket."

RACQ spokeswoman Renee Smith said the lowest prices in a decade across the state were driven by low oil costs and because petrol prices had hit the bottom of the price cycle.

"This is the first time since July 2005 the average daily cost of fuel in any Queensland city was below one dollar a litre," Ms Smith said.
