Future of Australian subs could be in Central Queensland

AUSTRALIA'S next generation of submarines could be supplied in Central Queensland.

Emerald-based engineering firm HEME is in line to become a supplier to German submarine manufacturer, ThyssenKrupp - should it be selected to build the subs.

It's hoped a potential new venture for the 2013 and 2015 Central Highlands Business of the Year will inspire other local operators to broaden their horizons.

This pro-active approach towards growing its business and exploring new opportunities is part of the reason HEME has won two Central Highlands Business Excellence Awards," Central Highlands Development Corporation (CHDC) general manager Sandra Hobbs said.

"I hope it inspires other local operators to consider breaking away from the norm and dreaming big to take their business to a new level."

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems Australia (TKMSA) chairman, Dr John White met HEME owners and operators Tony and Kym Hellmuth during recent supplier briefings across Australia.

"As the most experienced designer and builder of conventional submarines, we have been very impressed with the calibre of HEME, especially their precision machining, their work on major plant and ongoing focus on innovation," he said.

The SEA1000 Future Submarine Program is expected to cost $50 billion, the largest Defence procurement program in Australia's history.

Proposals by ThyssenKrupp and two other companies, from Japan and France, are being considered under the Federal Government's Competitive Evaluation Process.
