GERMAN luxury car brand Audi is at the forefront of electric car development, turning out a string of electron-powered concepts that have wowed the industry.
It’s no surprise, then, that the company should focus its attention on trying to work out what the refuelling station of the future will look like.
Audi has had a crack at it and the result is the e-den, part wordplay on the e-Tron electric car concept and part design-play on an upmarket, inner-city hairdressing salon.
OK, so comparing this chromefaced concept to a hair chop-shop is bordering on cruel but the resemblance is there.
The reason, Audi says, is because the electric car marks the end of the "splash-and-dash" method of refuelling, so we need something very different to the petrol station of today.
We will, they say, need more time to kick back while our electric car’s batteries are topped up for the next leg of the journey, so the e-den offers motorists "a place in which to work, eat or generally just recharge their own batteries while they wait".
"The mirror-walled exterior of the e-den installation is a futuristic reinterpretation of a 1950s American gas station and the classic fuel pump enshrined in glass like a museum piece bears testament to this fact," Audi says.
"Inside, the scene is dramatically more warmand homely, with calm-inducing plants and warmwood furniture from sustainable, fair-trade sources creating the perfect ambience in which to enjoy the organic food, magazines and books also on offer."
Perhaps we would be better off describing the refuelling experience of the future as "graze and haze"?
