A BUNDABERG company that produces a water-efficient raised garden bed has been recognised in a national competition.
Manager Grant Davies said the ezyGrow was runners-up in the Smart Approved WaterMark's product of the year section.
"The ezyGrow is a raised garden bed made out of polyethylene, the same material they make rainwater tanks out of," he said.
"It is UV stabilised and food grade, so it isn't going to leach nasty chemicals into your soil and it won't deteriorate in the elements for many years to come."
The ezyGrow is double-skinned so it is well insulated to stop the soil from drying out easily.
The unique aspect of the planter is a built-in container at the bottom that holds about 10 litres of water.
Mr Davies said when a gardener watered the planter or it rained the water filtered down to be caught in the container.
With the patented overflow system gardeners could see the water level and when they need to water their plants they could just turn the tube down and fill up their watering can to recycle the water and nutrients back into the garden.
He said tests had shown a gardener could save 60 litres of water a month by using the system.
Mr Davies said the ezyGrow system had proved to be popular with facilities such as child care centres and nursing homes.
"They like them because they're easy to move around, and kids can't pull them over," he said.
"They're also a great product for limited spaces such as balcony gardens because they catch the water and don't make a mess."
Mr Davies said the ezyGrow was designed and produced by a family company based in Bundaberg, and the product was distributed nationally.
Smart Approved WaterMark is a water conservation label identifying and promoting products and services which help save water, and is a not-for-profit organisation supported by government and industry.
