Gas tanker crash kills one, shuts down Captain Cook Hwy

A GAS tanker has rolled on a far north Queensland highway, killing one, injuring another and blocking the major arterial for almost 12 hours.

The tanker crashed and rolled at 7.20pm on Monday, trapping the 56-year-old male driver and a 39-year-old female passenger.

The driver was pulled from the wreck with serious injuries -- his passenger died at the scene.

Less than an hour after the crash, a leak in the tanker forced the closure of the highway.

Emergency crews were not able to open the road until 5.40am on Tuesday.

The Queensland Forensic Crash Unit is now investigating.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
