IT has been on the cards for some months and now it’s official - Gemfields Giants will not be in the 2011 Central Highlands Senior Rugby League season.
After a number of failed efforts to stage an official committee meeting to discuss the future of the club, the final decision came surprisingly from the players themselves.
“They (the players) didn’t think they would have enough numbers to sustain the season,” Gemfields committee spokesperson Donna Harbey said.
The 20-man squad may seem sizable but with mitigating factors such as work, injuries and general unavailability, the prospects appeared bleak for the most western club in the Central Highlands competition.
“They have got a team but because of work rosters, they don’t think it can be done,” she said. “We had 52 players sign-on last year and then by the end of the season, we only had nine.”
The Giants had a rollercoaster ride in last year’s league, suffering a number of heavy defeats and were plagued by a lack of playing numbers at games. The result was more forfeit fines for games which they couldn’t play and a lack of respect from neighbouring clubs from a loss of match-play for their own players.
Gemfields’ junior players will still be active in the local junior league competition with the fold only affecting the senior grade.
From here the only solution, Donna said, was for the club to look to the future.
“All we can do is plan for next year,” she said.
