Gillett backs Boyd to lead Broncos

RUGBY LEAGUE: Matt Gillett has backed fullback Darius Boyd to be the man to captain the Brisbane Broncos this season.

Boyd is one of several players who could be handed the role by coach Wayne Bennett following the retirement of Corey Parker at the end of last season.

Bennett could choose the likes of Sam Thaiday, Ben Hunt or Andrew McCullough to lead the Broncos, but Gillett said it would be hard to go against his Queensland and Kangaroos teammate.

"He (Boyd) has come a long way,” Gillett said as the Broncos' Four Nations representatives returned to training.

"Darius is such a great leader and he's been showing that for the last couple of years - especially in the representative arena as well.”

Bennett has made no indication as to when he will name Parker's replacement.

Boyd said if he did receive the honour of being captain, it would be a big turnaround in his career.

"It's something that I would probably have never thought about a few years ago to be honest,” he said.

"I probably wasn't in the position.

"If I got that captaincy it would be something I would have to pinch myself (about) - I would be pretty honoured.”

Boyd, 29, knows leading the Broncos will not be easy if he does get the role.

"It's a huge job,” he said.

"It's one of the biggest, if not the biggest, (jobs) in rugby league, to captain the Broncos, who have such great history and have had so many great players who have gone before and had so much success.”
