Gillow finishes in third place

WHILE Australia's Tour de France champion Cadel Evans was pressing hard for victory in a decisive time trial in France on Sunday morning, Belli Park cyclist Shara Gillow was immersed in an impressive time trial of her own in Germany.

The 23-year-old Gillow left the starting ramp at Schmölln just four minutes after Evans launched his blistering attack on the Grenoble circuit.

And Gillow produced an inspired performance, coming fifth in the stage and moving from eighth to finish in third place on the general classification after a week-long tour around Germany.

As the top-placed Australian, Gillow finished on the podium, just 32 seconds behind Sweden's Emma Johansson and 26 seconds American Amber Neben.

It was another strong result for the young Aussie, who is pushing for Olympic selection after a top-10 finish in the prestigious Tour of Italy recently.

On that occasion, Gillow produced an imposing performance in the mountains on her way to eighth place.
