AUSTRALIA has claimed silver in the women's 4x100 medley final, behind a dominant US outfit.

Missy Franklin, Rebecca Soni, Dana Vollmer and Allison Schmitt won the relay in world-record time (3:52.05) ahead of Australia's Emily Seebohm, Leisel Jones, Alicia Coutts and Melanie Schlanger (3:54.02) and Japan (3:55.73).

A strong backstroke finish by Franklin set the agenda for the rest of the US relay, despite a strong showing from Australia's Seebohm.

Australia lost ground in the breaststroke lap as Jones, in her last Olympics swim, lost ground to Olympic champion Soni.

But Australia climbed back remarkably well in the butterfly leg as Coutts recovered from fourth place to second, to set up a big finish for Schlanger.
