Goffin saves face after thanking 'girlfriends'
TENNIS: The crowd's awkward reaction said it all.
World No. 11 David Goffin lost the tennis match and - incredibly briefly - his girl after an unfortunate slip of the tongue during his speech at the Rotterdam World Tennis Tournament trophy presentation ceremony.
The Belgian star was thanking his team when he simply got a bit too carried away with the amount of people he had supporting him at the event.
"I would like to thank also my team," he said.
"I know it's not far from Belgium so I know that a lot of people came here to support me. There is my family. There is my friends. There is girlfriends also."
It's at this point that the 26-year-old takes a breath and realises he's made a big mistake and - after looking up at his player's box - can't help but giggle a bit about his unforced error.
"Girlfriend, sorry. Without the 'S'."
Despite losing the final of the ATP Tour 500 event to Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, it wasn't all bad news for Goffin.
He will become the first Belgian player to break into the top 10 ranked players when the rankings are updated tonight.
Goffin came to the Netherlands having never previously won a match at the event.
"I'm disappointed but at the end I played some good tennis," he said.
"I'm finally in the top 10 on Monday so I'm happy."
"I started the match well but Jo played better than me, especially at the start of the third set."
