Shot officer in critical condition

A THIRD person is assisting police in their inquiry into the shooting of a Gold Coast police officer at Pacific Pines this morning.

Plain Clothes Senior Constable Damian Leeding is in a critical condition in the Gold Coast Hospital at Southport after he was shot in the face when he responded to an armed robbery in progress at the Pacific Pines Tavern shortly before 11pm last night.

In a media conference at Pacific Pines this morning Assistant Commissioner Paul Wilson said a third person of interest had been located as a result of further inquiries.

"I am quite confident that we have every person involved in this incident in our custody assisting us with our inquiries at this stage and there is certainly no fear for the community here in Pac Pines," he said.

"It is very pleasing that the investigation has located persons of interest but it's a very, very sad, tragic and very serious day for members of the Queensland Police Service."

Police arrested two alleged offenders at the scene as they tried to run into nearby parkland.

One man was bitten by a police dog but Ambulance officers said he did not require hospital treatment.

Senior Constable Leeding has been in the police force for eight years, is married to another officer and has two young children.

Police have advised roads around the Pacific Pines shopping area will be closed this morning.

This includes Hotham Drive, Pacific Pines Boulevard, Archipelago Street and Pitcairn Way.
