PEAK HOUR CHAOS: Car explodes into flames on SEQ highway
UPDATE: A car has burst into flames on the M1 this afternoon, causing peak hour mayhem.
The fire happened in the southbound lanes near the Yatala exit at 4.25pm.
The occupant of the car was able to escape but the blaze has caused traffic to bank up several kilometres back to Beenleigh.
EARLIER: A CAR has smashed into a tram at Southport this afternoon, traffic jams have delayed buses and the M1 is in gridlock, causing major delays to the Gold Coast's transport network.
Northbound lanes are blocked on Scarborough Street after a red Audi crashed into the tram outside Australia Fair just after 12.30pm.
It is understood the driver was attempting to do a U-turn.
Trams were suspended between Southport and Surfers Paradise and resumed at about 1.30pm.
The tram driver said the crash came as a shock and had interrupted his lunch.
"I'll be having an extended dinner tonight," he said.
Crowds of shoppers flocked to the scene.
One ambulance crew is assessing the couple who were in the car.
Meanwhile, the jammed Gold Coast Highway has caused 25 minute delays to the bus network.
Three cars have come to grief on Currumbin Creek Bridge at 1.05pm causing more than 3km of congestion on Gold Coast Highway. Paramedics are on scene assessing one patient.
It comes as the M1 southbound is again in gridlock from Robina to Tugun as holiday-makers head south.
Northbound lanes from Tugun to Palm Beach and through Reedy Creek are also jammed.
Earlier, a motorcyclist is in hospital after he was struck by a car at a Hope Island roundabout and flung into nearby grassland today.
The crash happened around 10am when a male motorcyclist and car collided at the roundabout near Santa Barbara Rd and Oxenford Southport Rd.
Queensland Ambulance service said one patient was assessed on scene for a minor shoulder injury before being transported to Pindara Private Hospital.
A Queensland police spokeswoman said it is believed the motorcyclist was struck by a car and flung into near by grassland.
Multiple ambulance crews were on scene.
Meanwhile, at Reedy Creek, a car crashed into a pole at an intersection at Gemvale Rd and Stapeley Drive.
Queensland police said the crash happened at 11.08am and the driver was out of the vehicle.
