Gold medal chance on the water

AUSTRALIA could pick up at least two gold medals in sailing in London, and competition in both of them start today.

Five-time world champion Tom Slingsby is a hot favourite to take out the laser class, while Iain Jensen and Nathan Outteridge will also be very hard to beat in the 49er class.

The first races in both classes start at 9pm tonight (AEST), and a second race is scheduled at 9.45pm for the lasers and at 10.15pm for the 49ers.

Slingsby finished well down the field in Beijing, but has been dominant since, winning the last three world championships.

Importantly, he is also unbeaten in five regattas on the Olympic course at Weymouth.

He has spent countless hours on the course in recent months, and has won in light and heavy conditions.

Like Slingsby, Jensen and Outteridge won the Olympic test event at Weymouth and also have a world championship under their belt.

Jensen competed in Beijing with Ben Austin, and linked with Outteridge the following year.

Several other sailing classes start their competitions today, including the women's laser radial which starts at 9.05pm.
