Good as gold line-up for festival
THE quiet beachside village of Coolum will be transformed into Cool-Town for two days next month when thousands of music fans from near and far arrive for the annual Golden Days Festival.
The event is a celebration of roots and groove music and the surfing culture.
Last year's inaugural festival was such a huge success the event has been extended to two days.
Headlining the festival, which starts on Saturday, November 19 at the Coolum soccer fields will be Xavier Rudd, The Cruel Sea and The Beautiful Girls.
Also appearing will be blues and roots legend Jeff Lang, The Winnie Coopers, Dialectrix, Ashleigh Mannix, Oka, Cheap Fakes, Cabins, Floating Bridges, Stryder, and Cleveland Blues and The Red Eye Junction.
On the following day the festival will become more family orientated and move to beachside Tickle Park.
This free day of festivities will include a stand-up paddle board race, the Red Bull skate team, giant kites and, of course, top-class music all day.
Sunday will also see the world's first totally green surf jam, surfed on wooden surfboards shaped by master craftsman Tom Wegener. The jam is open to anyone.
In keeping with the family friendly feel of the day, kids will be catered for with sand sculpting lessons and treasure hunts.
The two-day festival will finish with a film on a massive movie screen.
The festival looks set to provide a major economic boost for Coolum with 55% of bookings coming from outside the Sunshine Coast.
Bookings for the music and surf event have been received from as far away as Adelaide and Rockhampton, even from Christchurch and Ohio in the US.
Promoter Mark Pico said the festival would provide a weekend of great music and entertainment and a boost to the local tourist industry.
"We have tried to create one of the hottest coastal, family friendly festivals in Australia by combining music that is hugely popular, such as Xavier Rudd and The Cruel Sea, and mixing this with Coolum's magical location and vibe," he said.
"By adding paddleboard racing, skate and BMX demos, giant kites and surfing comps we feel that this we will attract a broad spectrum of music and ocean lovers to Coolum over this weekend."
Golden Days tickets are available at Sierra Cafe on the Coolum esplanade or at www.goldendaysfestival.com.
