Grant Hackett fails to qualify for Rio Olympics

GRANT Hackett's bid to qualify for the Rio de Janeiro Olympics is over after he finished seventh in his 200 metres freestyle semi-final at the Australian Swimming Championships in Adelaide.

Hackett had already missed out on qualifying for the 400m freestyle after he was fourth in last night's final.

The two-time Olympic 1,500m freestyle champion has confirmed he will retire from the sport for a second time.

"It's disappointing obviously but at the same time I gave it my best shot," Hackett said.

"I was honest about my preparation and the ups and downs I had there. The 400 yesterday really took it out of me."
