Grantham after it was devasted in the January 10 floods. The town was today the first place in Queensland to be declared a designated reconstruction area.

THE disaster-struck community of Grantham is to become the first designated reconstruction area under the new Queensland Reconstruction Authority’s powers.

“This move will accelerate voluntary relocation and voluntary land-swaps in the affected area and that means we could see reconstruction begin in Grantham by mid-year and see some people in their new homes by Christmas,” Premier Anna Bligh said today.

Lockyer Valley Mayor Steve Jones said council was extremely happy with the speed at which the QRA was taking action about the relocation and reconstruction of Grantham.

He said the involvement of residents was central to the success of the reconstruction.

“It is fantastic to see the Grantham residents come up with their own positive plan for relocation at the recent ‘Strengthening Grantham Workshops’,” Cr Jones said.

“These workshops are the key tool which allows the community to create their own future.”
