Grazier, 62, killed in bike crash

A TIGHT-KNIT Darling Downs community is today mourning the death of a member of one of its founding families.

Grazier John Maunder, 62, was killed when thrown from the quad bike he was riding on the family property Jolimont, located on Jolimont Road, about 25km north-east of Jandowae.

Police were called to the property about 12.20pm Saturday.

Mr Maunder was announced dead at the scene.

One resident described Mr Maunder as a prominent member of Jandowae and Jinghi Valley’s rural community who had become “somewhat of a recluse” in recent years.

In his younger days, he was a constant presence at the Jandowae saleyards and community events.

Jolimont was one of the first properties to be gazetted in the Jandowae district.

Mr Maunder was not married.

Jandowae’s Darryl Donald said many in Jandowae were shocked to learn of Mr Maunder’s death.

“He was very well-known and came from a pioneer family of a local district,” he said.

Investigations into the crash are continuing with police to prepare a report for the coroner.
