Great Barrier Reef gets its own office

AN "OFFICE of the Great Barrier Reef" will be created within the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection.

It will oversee implementation of the Queensland Government's reef management strategies and programs.

Environment Minister Steven Miles said: "There are at least 11 Queensland Government agencies with some interest or involvement in reef management, as well as three Commonwealth agencies and multiple local governments.

"By consolidating our expertise in one office we can better co-ordinate our activities on reef matters and ensure we are delivering on our commitments across the government."

A new Great Barrier Reef Water science taskforce will also be created.

Queensland's chief scientist, Dr Geoff Garrett, will lead the taskforce of experts from the science, business and agriculture sectors.

It will advise the government on how to achieve reef water quality improvement targets.
