Guardiola knows the score for Monaco clash
MANCHESTER City manager Pep Guardiola knows his side has to score goals in Monaco if it is to reach the quarter-finals of the European Champions League after coming out on top in an eight-goal thriller at Etihad Stadium.
City came from behind twice to win 5-3 thanks to two goals from Sergio Aguero and strikes from Raheem Sterling, John Stones and Leroy Sane.
Guardiola rode the rollercoaster on the touchline in Manchester and knows the second leg in France on March 15 will be just as frenetic.
"I am so happy for the result, we are still alive," he said after watching his team take a crucial two goal advantage.
"These kind of things help this club to achieve another step.
"We attacked in small spaces. That's why they wanted me to come here, Everybody has to be congratulated.
"We are going to fly to Monaco to score as many goals as possible.
"If we don't score in Monaco we will be eliminated."
City looked on the edge of a bigger home defeat at some stages but rallied well in the end to pull clear.
Sterling gave City the lead after 26 minutes but former Manchester United striker Radamel Falcao's header and Kylian Mbappe's powerful rising drive pulled the visitors back in the game.
Willy Caballero saved a Falcao penalty just after the break before Monaco keeper Danijel Subasic's error handed Aguero his first goal.
Colombian Falcao showed he was back to his best after poor loan spells at Chelsea and United with a beautiful third goal for Monaco and the tie looked to be slipping away from City.
But Aguero, who probably should have won a penalty after appearing to be brought down by Subasic earlier in the game, volleyed in another equaliser before Stones slid in a fourth.
Sane handed City the crucial two-goal cushion with a simple tap-in from Aguero's pass eight minutes from time to send Guardiola in to raptures.
The Spaniard knows, though that with the attacking threat this Monaco side possesses, this tie is not over yet.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid has taken the upper hand in its last-16 clash with Bayer Leverkusen with a 4-2 win in Germany in the first leg.
