NSW Parliament could quite literally go to the dogs if one MP has his way.

Mark Pearson from the Animal Justice Party believes his push for companion animals to be allowed in parliament will receive support from many MPs.

Member for Clarence Chris Gulaptis has other thoughts.

The party believes companion animals are deliberately and consistently overlooked.

Mr Pearson said parliament would be setting a good example in caring for animals and MPs would likely feel more peace of mind, patience and clarity.

He said it would follow the examples of numerous companies that allow animals into the workplace.

But Clarence MP Chris Gulaptis joked parliament, which is sometimes referred to as the bear pit, already had its share of animals during question time.

He supported animals used for medical purposes, such as guide dogs, entering parliament but was against having companion animals do so.

Mr Gulaptis said it would be a problem logistically and the noise from debate and division bells could upset the animals.

"I love dogs, but there is a place for them," he said.

"I don't think it would make us work more efficiently, it might make us more compassionate."

Mr Gulaptis described parliament as a Disney movie filled with different breeds of dogs - from the studious dog to the yapping terrier and the tough, muscle dogs.

When asked which dog stereotype he fell into, he said, "It's hard to give an assessment of yourself.

"I think I'm one of those pack animals, the beagles that go after the fox."

Mr Gulaptis also described himself as Snoopy, after the lovable pet dog from comic strip Peanuts.

"(I'm) a bit of a dreamer, a bit of a philosopher. You run your own race with a bit of panache."
