EXCITING times are ahead for the fledgling Gemfields motocross club.

The club held a meeting on Saturday which 18 people attended, with the young people suggesting the name GXS - Gemfields Xtreme Sports.

"We are really happy with the number of people that turned up to the meeting," club spokeswoman Linda Drake said.

"The young people have been talking about it for the last couple of years.

"The club is about getting more activities happening for young people.

"We definitely have enough people and energy on the Gemfields to make it happen."

Linda said a committee had not yet been formed as a lot of the young people involved were not aware of what it took to make a committee work.

"It's a great learning process," Linda said.

"We are encouraging young people to take responsibility of forming the club.

"It's close to the heart of many young people on the Gemfields so we want to do it through them.

"The vision is to build an international standard motocross track and also include a BMX area, ordinary dirt bike and billy cart area."

Besides the meeting, the club also held a fun afternoon of games and activities for the youth at the Gemfields.

"The ones that came had an absolute ball," Linda said.

Looking to the New Year, the club is planning an Australia Day fundraiser with a rally for bikes and four-wheel drives, along with children's activities and catering.

"That should be a lot of fun," Linda said.
