FORMER Gympie star Jimmy Downey looks set to make his A-League return this weekend.

Downey is expected to be named in the Wellington Phoenix line-up to take on Gold Coast United this Sunday at Skilled Park on the Gold Coast.

Downey moved to the Phoenix in 2011 after a stint in Dutch football club Sparta Rotterdam and has had a good pre-season training in New Zealand.

The 23-year -old speedster will try to reignite his A-League career in the midfield with Phoenix after injury slowed his progression at the Perth Glory and the now-defunct North Queensland Fury.

Downey has had a slight groin injury this year, but it looks to be only a minor problem.

The Wellington Phoenix coach Ricky Herbert will name the side today and the team will fly to Australia tomorrow for the opening round of the A-League.
