Havoc on Bruce Highway after 1200km chase

A CRASH on Saturday morning was 1200km in the making as three young men and one girl tried to outrun highway patrol police.

All four of them were caught as they were treated in hospital beds, but only three were in the crash.

The crash near Miriam Vale at 3.20am on Saturday left a 17-year-old girl with a suspected fractured eye socket, another passenger - a 21-year-old man -- with a broken pelvis, and the 21-year-old alleged male driver with a broken jaw, sternum and ribs.

The driver will face Gladstone Magistrates Court this morning on a total of 11 charges, including stealing, unlicensed driving and for injuring his friends while driving, a charge of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing grievous bodily harm.

A third man, a 20-year-old, was dropped at Gladstone Hospital before the crash even happened. He is facing property offences.

Police will allege the sedan was stolen near Gympie in the early hours of Friday morning after a car on the same street was rummaged through.

The trio of offenders then made their way 350km along the Bruce Hwy to Gladstone, where they dropped the 20-year-old man at the hospital

It is alleged that the remaining two drove 110km north to Rockhampton, where they picked up a 21-year-old man, and headed back down south.

Forty kilometres south of Gladstone, they evaded police and continued south.

A further 300km south, near Gympie, they evaded police again, turning around in what would be their last jaunt along the Bruce Hwy in their marathon joyride.

This trip ended after 280km when they are believed to have run up the back of a semi-trailer near Miriam Vale.

The three of them got out of the car before another semi-trailer crashed into it in the middle of the road.

The teenage girl was airlifted to Rockhampton Base Hospital while the two men were taken to Gladstone Hospital. Both of the truck drivers were uninjured.
