Hawke on top of his game
DARRYL Hawke didn’t miss a beat at the Emerald Gymkhana, cruising through all 10 events to claim the highest points score for any rider at the weekend.
The 14-year-old Emerald Horse and Pony Club rider breezed through the show jumping, rider class and sporting events to take out the gymkhana’s top honours.
The youngster, who has been riding since he was five years old, was a former regional representative, placing 10th in the state in the Combined Training A2 Class.
Seniors through to a pint-sized three-year-old rider made up the field.
“The little ones don’t do a lot,
they’re only led,” Emerald club spokeswoman Fay Hawke said.
Dysart were too strong in the all-important march-past, taking home title honours against teams from Springsure, Emerald, Comet River, McKenzie River and Clermont.
Hannah Cheal and Wayne Hawke were judged the best presented from the Emerald contingent, with Emerson Cant doing enough in the points department to be named Emerald’s highest scoring female rider.
The Emerald Gymkhana is one of many on the Central Highlands’ circuit with riders from near and far lining up for a shot at the championship.
Rider-horse combinations of all ages will put their best foot and hoof forward in the Central Highlands-wide carnival.
